Great news for our colleagues Prof. Peter Pelz, Jan Lemmer and Dr. Christian Schmitz.
Their article “Misled by Betz and Unsteady Flow: Review on Turbine Arrays Falsely Deemed Optimal” has been awarded the International Journal of Marine Energy Silver Award.
In their article, our colleagues show that the optimisation of a tidal channel can be treated as a two-stage optimisation problem. A closer look reveals that the power coefficient introduced by Betz, which is often used as a target, is unsuitable for optimal design. This is due to its inappropriate energy reference. This results in turbine arrays that are wrongly deemed to be “optimal”.
The article was published in EWTEC 2021 Special Issue in the International Journal of Marine Energy.
