The Chair of Fluid Systems showed strong presence at the NFDI4Ing conference 2022. The conference motto was “Unifying the Understanding of RDM in Engineering Science”, took place on October 26 and 27 and was hosted by WZL of the RWTH Aachen University.

Manuela Richter and Kevin Logan held a presentation titled “Data literacy right from the start – FAIR Data Management in Engineering Sciences in the first semester of the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering – Sustainable Engineering at TU Darmstadt” about the integration of data literacy into engineering curricula.

Michaela Leštáková and Danielle Inturri held a workshop with tips on improving code quality and unit testing titled „A No-Nonsense Guide to Higher Code Quality for Researchers”.

First glimpses into the successful project proposal of DALIA initiated by the Chair of Fluid Systems were given in the workshop “Development of a novel platform for teaching and learning materials as a knowledge base for FAIR data use and provision”.

And last but not least, a deeper insight into the open peer review process used by the journal was given by Kevin Logan in his talk “ing.grid – FAIR Publishing with Open Review”.

The conference went for a more scientific approach, aiming for a structured review process and awards for researchers not directly involved in the NFDI4ing. The award winners were Wendy (Pengyin) Shan for the best Conference Contribution with her contribution “Prepare RDM for Decentralized and Blockchain Based Data Source” and Rory Macneil for the “NFDI4Ing Award 2022 for the best RDM Solution” with his demonstration “RSpace: An Electronic Lab Notebook designed to enhance FAIR workflows and FAIRification of research data”.

The conference has also made a step towards reusability as the files used for automation have been provided to next year’s organizing committee and will soon be publicly available under https://git.rwth-aachen.de/nfdi4ing/nfdi4ing-conference. Along with that, all contributions of the conference are publicly available on Zenodo.

Some of the research presented at the NFDI4ing conference will be published as a special issue in the FAIR data management journal ing.grid.
