Tutorial Digitalizing an automated brewing system

The Tutorial

In the tutorial, practical experiments are used to gain an understanding of pneumatic circuits, control pneumatics and measurement data acquisition. Starting with simple pneumatics circuits, these are gradually expanded to include elements of electropneumatics, control pneumatics and measurement data acquisition.

The tutorial is divided into three phases. In the first phase, an introductory script is provided for familiarization purposes. This is followed by the exercise phase, in which the first automation tasks are to be implemented programmatically. Appropriate hardware is available for this purpose. In the last phase, a changing task is processed on the programming of the brewing system. In this way, the functional scope of the brewing system is continuously expanded. Finally, beer is brewed with the help of the new program code and the recorded data is analyzed.

The tutorial aims at the practical illustration of automation and digitalization in the process industry. Programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) using Structured Text (ST) is learned and the program code is first tested virtually. Documentation is done via GitLab.

On brew day, the extended program code is applied and a brew of beer is brewed fully automatically. The collected data will be processed and can be used to extend the digitization of the system. At the end of the tutorial, the brewing product can be tested.
